When a Flood Strikes Your Durham Residence, SERVPRO Strikes Back!
SERVPRO of North Durham is here to help return your home back to preloss condition!
Repairing your Home and Possessions after Flood Damage in Durham
The type of repairs necessary after a flash flood depends on the kind of water that has entered your home. Whitewater is clean with minimal health concerns barring the possibility of mold growth. Grey water is contaminated but poses a limited danger to a homeowner's health and safety. Blackwater, which is common in flash flooding, is tainted by raw sewage, animal carcass or other toxins and can cause e.coli, salmonella and other serious health concerns.
Homes suffering from flood damage in Durham rely on a quick assessment and remediation services. Often it is necessary to cordon off affected areas with only designated technicians using protective gear allowed to enter. Blackwater poses a severe health risk, and because of this, the cleaning procedure becomes more complicated.
We need to extract the water first and foremost. SERVPRO use portable extractors for damages that have been contained and only affect a small area. Where the impact is widespread, we can bring in larger truck-mounted extractors capable of removing thousands of gallons of water in one go. Blackwater complicates a restoration effort, and we may have to lift light structure that comes into contact with it, like drywall.
A home is not just a structure but also a collection of personal possessions that hold value in a literal sense and a sentimental one. Although flash flooding does tend to require more replacement of belongings than usual, SERVPRO can salvage a significant amount. Using wet cleaning methods, chemical foams or even sending items to a specialized facility can make a huge difference in our water restoration effort.
At SERVPRO our motto is to restore over replace. Restoring is typically inexpensive when compared to re-surfacing or replacing. It is also ideal for homeowners who do not have to discard those precious sentimental possessions after an unforeseen disaster.

Helping Restore Your Property With Water Cleanup Services Resolves Overflow Issues In Durham
A clogged drain in a running sink can lead to your bathroom sink overflowing.
Helping Restore Your Property With Water Cleanup Services
A clogged drain in a running sink can lead to your bathroom sink overflowing. Your Durham area home can sustain severe damage if this water remains on your floors. Water can easily saturate carpeting, the flooring underneath, and eventually end up in the ceiling of lower levels in your house.
When a resident in Durham finds such a mess, water cleanup begins at once by mopping up the visible water. Once you call us, SERVPRO professionals arrive and start by measuring the amount of moisture remaining in your floors, lower walls, and other materials. We track the water so we can more efficiently clean that up, also.
An overflowed sink typically involves clean water, which means saving your carpeting remains highly possible. Flooding, however, when it comes from outside your home or from a contaminated source like a back-flowing septic drain, means many damaged sections of your home require extensive cleaning.
September is National Preparedness Month, and many of the same tips homeowners learn for preparing for flooding can carry over to cleaning up much cleaner messes. Quickly removing objects that sit in the path of oncoming water can save them from needing restoration work later. Even after you turn the water off at the source in a stopped up sink, the water already on the floor continues to spread.
As the water flows outward, it slowly begins to evaporate. This release into the air creates water vapor. Our moisture detection units can read the amounts released into the air. If hot water was involved, this could increase the amount of water vapor the air holds. As this warmer air cools to room temperature, condensation on cooler surfaces in the area rapidly takes place. Turning on a fan can help keep condensation from occurring before we arrive.
Once we begin working, we use heavy-duty air movers and dehumidifiers to remove the water that escaped into your home's air. Floor mats that extract the moisture hiding there help remove what our extraction wands left behind. As our work continues, we monitor the drastic reduction of moisture from your house's materials and the air. Water cleanup also includes wiping down and sanitizing any belongings, walls, and other surfaces that came into contact with the water.
SERVPRO of North Durham's 24-hour service number, (919) 467-0880, is answered by qualified professionals who can provide you with immediate assistance when your home needs water cleanup services. Always Faster To Any Size Disaster, we work with families in Weaver, Upland, and Rougemont protect their homes all year long.

Communication About The Processes Of Fire Damage Mitigation And Restoration In Durham
When homeowners in Durham face fire damage, many of them just want to get things back to normal.
The Processes Of Fire Damage Mitigation And Restoration
After a traumatizing event in your Durham home involving fire and smoke, many personal belongings need specialized cleaning services, forming one of the more crucial aspects of mitigation and restoration. We clean many items on-site when space permits such activities. When we do not have enough space, we perform this at our facility.
When homeowners in Durham face fire damage, many of them just want to get things back to normal. Explaining each step of the restoration process to our customers can make the time required seem less stressful, as well as less mysterious. How we handle your personal belongings and household items is a relatively straightforward process.
SERVPRO technicians take great dare when packing these items up and filling out inventory lists, typically working in teams to make the work more efficient. These lists are not the only pieces of documentation we provide our customers, though. Each box, of course, has a corresponding label to each entry on the inventory sheets, but other labels can indicate the status of a box's contents.
We ensure that the label on each box provides current information about the contents. These labels inform you about questionable items, damaged belonging, and possible additional claims that need your attention. Questionable items typical cover those belongings that you, the customer, felt might have a chance at restoration and wanted our technicians to attempt cleaning the items. Some of these may become successful, others might break during cleaning (causing them to fall into the additional claims category), and others we leave for you to decide about the outcome.
Damaged items are those belongings we attempt to clean but because of exposure to heat during the fire or the contrast between the heat and the cold of the firefighters' water endure hairline cracks in its material end up broken even more. This is common and many times is not foreseeable by visually inspecting the items it occurs in before cleaning begins. You might still want to keep the item, or you may wish to file a claim on it with your insurance.
Claim items come from either of the two above categories when cleaning either reveals additional flaws, the item breaks further, or our best efforts do not satisfy you. You need to forward a list of these items to your insurance adjuster as soon as possible.

Water Damage Can Often Be A Result Of Remediating Fire Damage Inside Your Durham Pub
If you ignore the water damage inside of your Durham pub, it can lead to further damages occurring on your property.
Water Damage Can Often Be A Result Of Remediating Fire Damage
When the fire department extinguishes a small fire that occurred inside of your business, it can leave behind a significant volume of water damage. The kitchen of your pub may only show a few small signs that a fire did happen, such as soot built up around the walls of the oven. However, the water damage is a little more obvious, as the walls are soaked, and the tile floor has been exposed to copious amounts of water. It is wise to call for professional help immediately, not only to address the remnants of the fire but also to remediate the water damage.
If you ignore the water damage inside of your Durham pub, it can lead to further damages occurring on your property. The significant increase in moisture creates the perfect environment for mold spores to grow into mold colonies. Water can sink through the spaces between the tile and cause the base of it to become engorged, causing cracks in the tile itself. Leaving the water damage can only result in further damages that are higher in cost to address than the source would have been.
SERVPRO responds to calls immediately, striving to arrive at your home within hours. No matter the time, we can send our team to your business. We can work through the night to remain unseen by your customers, as we understand how important the foot-traffic of your business is.
Our IICRC-certified techs can bring unique trade tools with them that specialize in the remediation of water damage. SERVPRO can use a combination of extractors, ventilation fans, air movers, and dehumidifiers to clean up the damage inside of your pub. Extractors are particularly useful for any standing puddles of water while the other three tools are used in conjunction to draw moisture out of your equipment and even the building itself.
If extinguishing a fire ever causes water damage to your property, never hesitate to call for help. Reach out to SERVPRO of North Durham by phoning (919) 467-0880. We always aim to return your business to its pre-damaged state.

Flood Damage Mitigation Makes it Possible to Move Back Home in Durham
Flood damage can seem insurmountable. Contact SERVPRO for effective remediation services.
Team SERVPRO Provides Thorough Remediation After Flooding in Your Home
Eliminating the hazards in your Durham home when a disaster affects its condition keeps your family safe from injury and illness. At SERVPRO, we take your family's comfort and health very seriously as we work on your home. We know that microbes and parasites carried into your home, as well as other debris, can continually cause concerns and problems, so we remove these as quickly as we can.
When a SERVPRO crew arrives at your home, we start by taking a thorough assessment of the flood damage in Durham affecting your home. Some situations, such as carpeting, require the removal of materials before we proceed to additional steps in the mitigation process. Carpeting and its underlying padding become so contaminated during a flood, that removal of more porous floor coverings becomes necessary to protect the home and its occupants from the lingering effects of flooding. Microbes only require a small amount of moisture to remain viable and capable of causing severe illnesses.
Because of the ability of carpet and padding to hang on to and trap moisture, flood-damaged carpeting can make drying out your home, and its overall restoration, take much longer than needed. Removing these two pieces of your home's interior facilitates more rapid drying of the flooring underneath while keeping the air from absorbing any evaporated water previously held in the carpet's fibers.
Silt and washed-in sediment can also harbor germs throughout your residence's interior. We use specially angled brushes to sweep this out of cracks and crevices, away from the fine grooves and indentations of brick and concrete, and anywhere else silt might get stuck and that our vacuums need a boost. Some of these brushes contain very stiff bristles, so we always choose with care to avoid damaging softer materials.
Removing everything from carpet and padding to excess moisture and debris helps get your property ready for our ventilation and drying machinery. We use moisture detectors to ensure our work progresses correctly, as well as help us detect any hidden pockets of water or moisture that might cause damage to your property in the way of mold growth or damage from water. The longer water can hide inside your home from a flood, the more likely these problems become.
SERVPRO of North Durham continues to assist families in Upland, Weaver, and Chester when disasters like flood damage make their houses uninhabitable. Calling us at (919) 467-0880 can make everything “Like it never even happened” so you can move your family back home soon.

Drying Methods Can Make A Big Difference During Water Cleanup In Durham
Professional water cleanup technicians must use appropriate drying techniques when mitigating water damage challenges.
Drying Methods Can Make A Big Difference During Water Cleanup
Professional water cleanup technicians must use appropriate drying techniques when mitigating water damage challenges. There are specialized equipment and drying methodology to choose from, and the situation at hand determines the methods we select. Some of the methods we use when addressing water intrusion challenges in Durham include open drying, closed drying, and dehumidification.
When the outside air is drier and warmer compared to the one inside your Durham property during water cleanup, the SERVPRO team may decide to use open drying. It means we have to measure the temperature inside and outside the building to be sure this method can effectively speed up the rate of evaporation. For this method to work, the outside air needs to contain over 20 grains of water per pound when equated to the one in structure.
If we have to implement open drying, then our SERVPRO technicians start by sealing off the affected area from the outside air. We can do this by closing all doors and windows as well as installing dehumidification, air movement, and heating equipment to control the inside environment and remove the evaporated water vapor. In situations where the affected area is a small part of a big room, then we can create a drying chamber by surrounding the area with plastic sheeting.
Evaporation adds moisture to the air, and there is a need to remove it through dehumidification. Our SERVPRO technicians can decide to use refrigerant or desiccant dehumidifiers. Refrigerant dehumidifiers cool the air they take in below the dew point, and it condenses in its internal evaporation coils. We then remove the water that collects, and the process goes on and on. On the other hand, desiccant dehumidifiers work by absorbing the moisture from the damp air. The equipment has two outlets with one blowing dry air into the structure and the other one removing wet air from the building.
SERVPRO of North Durham is a trusted leader in mold, storm, fire, and water damage restoration. Call us at (919) 467-0880 for our highly trained technicians to return your property to its preloss condition.

The Mold Damage That Harms Your Durham Residence
Mold and mildew can grow almost anywhere in Durham properties.
Mold Damage In Your Residence
Mold and mildew can grow almost anywhere in Durham properties. These microbes often remain undiscovered until their colonies become quite large. They also come in different colors, with some sticky while other strains of microbes seem dusty, instead.
Your dwelling in Durham can contain mold damage from one or more of several strains of microbe. All microbial infestations covering an area larger than ten square feet require professional remediation to protect the home from current damage. SERVPRO's remediation services address this as well as the prevention of future problems, including the possibility of other colonies forming in other locations.
When we remediate a home, we make sure that the area we work on remains enclosed in a negative pressure containment system. We set these up to keep any free-floating microbes from passing into clean sections of your house. The way these systems catch microbes forces them either outside or into a HEPA filter. Both methods work well at removing these excess microbes.
We realize that many microbes might already exist in the air within your home, just waiting for the perfect spot. We counter this with different methods. We use air scrubbers in other areas of your home to remove any spores that already escaped. Mold can release spores at any time. We also treat mold-prone areas with antimicrobial sprays.
Microbes require the presence of moisture before they can begin growing. Your home's indoor climate should stay dry enough to prevent any overgrowth of microbes. Mold damage indicates that a leak or other source of moisture exists. We rely on our moisture sensors to locate these so we can eliminate them. Even slight elevations can cause mold problems, and any amount can lead to structures in your home becoming damaged from the water itself.
SERVPRO of North Durham is ready to help your family live in a freshly-remediated home that is now free of mold damage. Clean air keeps you from breathing in spores that might cause health effects. We are here to help you keep your home safe and healthy, and only a phone call away. Contact us at (919) 467-0880, so we can start remediation and restore your home “Like it never even happened.”

Acting Quickly to Limit Flood Damages in Your Durham Home
SERVPRO Advices to Have Flood Insurance to Protect Your Durham Property
SERVPRO Says We're Faster To Any Size Disaster--Call for Storm Damage Help
The unpredictable weather of the spring and summer months throughout the Durham area can leave your home a little worse for the wear. As possible as it is for your home to sustain damages all at once that can lead to emergency conditions, more often, these damages are slow and happen over years of wear. Once enough roof or siding damage has occurred, these elements fail at their weakest points and allow for water penetration.
While this might not always lead to flood damages in your Durham residence, a significant storm with a hard run off or torrential rainfall could flood your home over a brief period. Depending on where your house sustained the storm damages that allowed the penetration, various areas of your residence could have to face this high volume of water. Your best solution is to reach out to our SERVPRO restoration team immediately.
Not only does your insurance company require the assessment of a professional to finalize claims to pay for restoration work on your house, this same assessment can help you to better understand the damage that your home has sustained throughout the flooding for yourself. This inspection details the areas of your home that require the most attention, what equipment is necessary, and also what contents and structural components within your house have become irreparably damaged.
Our SERVPRO professionals also work as quickly as possible to mitigate the damages to your home to prevent them from getting worse. Even amid the inspection process, which can be an involved step, mitigation must begin right away to keep the cost of the restoration down and unsalvageable damage to a minimum.
There is no way to prepare for a flood occurring within your home adequately, but with the right professional assistance, you do not have to be on your own to clean up the mess and restore the damages. Depend on our SERVPRO of North Durham team of restoration specialists. Give our emergency response team a call at the first sign of water damage at (919) 467-0880.

Exactly where is Durham in NC?
Mold Damage Can Affect Damp Areas Of Your Durham Residence
You might not notice mildew or mold damage in its initial growth stages if it occurs in rarely visited areas of your home.
Mold Damage Can Affect Damp Areas Of Your Home
If your home in Durham has an attic, basement, or garage, moisture can accumulate in these areas easily during the colder winter months. Both showering and cooking produce large amounts of moisture that enters the air and can end up in these areas as condensation.
Durham residents might not notice mildew or mold damage in its initial growth stages if it occurs in rarely visited areas of the home. During the summer months, the need for sporting equipment or camping gear can reveal moldy boxes and equipment or areas on walls and ceilings.
SERVPRO can help you save time and money while also reducing the general aggravation of finding damaged belongings and structures in your home by performing mold remediation services for you. Because mold growth produces spores, this microorganism can cause health effects, especially in sensitive people.
The EPA recommends against homeowners removing mold from areas more massive than 10 square feet themselves and instead cautions the homeowner in general to seek professional remediation services. Our technicians hold certifications from the IICRC and have gained extensive experience from performing this work in both large and small jobs in both residential settings and businesses of all types.
SERVPRO's services include both remediation of your home's structure and also of any affected contents. We remove mold and its spores from your home so new colonies cannot start a new infestation. Our techniques include the use of air scrubbers, in conjunction with negative air pressure set-ups, that pull spores and mold particles, dust, and anything else in the air, out of your home and away from your residence.
Once we finish removing damaged materials and clean things up, we apply antimicrobial agents to keep mold from coming back. However, one of the first things our experts do before we begin remediation involves the use of moisture readers to determine where the moisture came from that allowed the problem of mold damage to start in the first place. Repairing any defects that permit water to enter through rarely occupied areas of your house minimizes the chances of the problem from arising again in the future.
SERVPRO of North Durham's technicians are always ready to help homeowners in Rougemont and Marcus Hook reclaim their dwellings from the destruction mold damage so easily causes. Contact us by calling our local emergency service line at (919) 467-0880. We are always available to answer your call.

Stormwater Removal and Drying in Durham Needed? The Solution is SERVPRO
Durham Property Owners Look to SERVPRO for Storm Damage Mitigation
For as much potential hazards that could affect your Durham home, many homeowners opt for extensive coverage for their insurance to satisfy all of these possible problems. While you might get covered, when disaster strikes, seeing the kind of damage that nature can do to your property can leave you speechless. Fortunately, professional restoration services can help you to overcome any of the obstacles standing between the current conditions and a fully restored homestead.
One of the most commonly added options for insurance for homes in the Durham area is flooding. With the severe weather systems that can pass through the region with little warning, many homes are in the lower lying areas where flooding can readily occur. The trouble is, many homeowners do not realize that their houses are susceptible to these floodwaters until the damage has already occurred. By this point, you have to look for quick repairs and home restoration to overcome this present damage and prevent it from happening again in the immediate future.
When our SERVPRO professionals arrive at your home following a storm initiated flood, our priority is to seal off the areas of vulnerability (when possible) to prevent the same issue from happening again. The solution may be as fundamental as using hydraulic cement to patch over holes and cracks in the mortar joints in the blockwork. However, there are other times where this process requires more intricate action to prevent further water penetration.
Extraction is the next step, as pooling water can wreak havoc on the structural integrity of your home. Water removal, executed by our skilled IICRC certified technicians using industry-leading equipment, is key to storm damage mitigation. In some cases, flood cuts by our SERVPRO technicians, this is the removal of drywall or paneling allowing for thorough drying of the inside of wall cavities. This process also quickly removes excess moisture from these saturated construction materials reducing the overall drying time.
This introduction to the flood restoration work that our SERVPRO of North Durham professionals do might be brief and concise, but it can show you how quickly we work to ensure that your home gets protected from further damage. Our team is available 24/7 to help you through any emergency that you face. Give us a call anytime at (919) 467-0880.

Why SERVPRO Has Its Work Cut Out for Water Removal from Durham Basements
Finding water damage in your basement can cause panic. Contact SERVPRO right away for drying out and remediation services.
Certified Technicians are Trained to Dry Out Your Property After Water Damage
While water removal from a Durham home is rarely an easy task to accomplish, reversing the damage done to a basement can be another matter entirely. In most cases where water damage is severe enough to reach the subterranean level of a home, there is enough liquid to remain pooled and soaked into the materials down there, unable to escape back into the air up above. While drying out upper levels of a home may be possible with proper aeration and climate conditions, SERVPRO has to take extra steps to ensure that the average basement remains free of excess moisture after our restorations are complete.
The first step in many basement water removal cases in Durham is to extract any pooled standing water in the area. Being the lowest point in both the home and the surrounding area, any standing water remaining in the basement should have nowhere else to flow. We use either truck-mounted or portable water extraction technology to pump water out to the street or nearby natural areas and away from your home. Only once this task has been completed can we worry about other drying work.
Ensuring low relative humidity in a basement is a critical part of our work, as exposure to high relative atmospheric humidity for an extended time can degrade structural materials and cost thousands of dollars in damages later on. Without many windows or wind currents flowing through the area, a basement cannot lose water in its atmosphere or soaked into materials at all without the help of an experienced crew fielded by a certified company like SERVPRO. We take care to simultaneously take water out of the air and whisk it off of affected surfaces to provide a fuller, more complete drying experience for your home.
SERVPRO of North Durham has handled dozens of basement water removal jobs over the years and is available on a 24/7 basis to respond to your calls for help. Contact us at (919) 467-0880.

Durham’s Mold Damage Technicians Explain Air Scrubbing Machines
If mold ever develops inside your Durham townhome, it can spread into areas throughout the building.
Mold Damage Technicians Explain Air Scrubbing Machines
If mold ever develops inside your Durham townhome, it can spread into areas throughout the building. Once a fungus develops it forms structures called hyphae that release reproductive spores into the air. These spores are microscopic and can float long distances before settling onto wet, organic materials.
Since fungi can cause health effects with some people, extra measures get taken to remediate the problem and keep the contamination from spreading and negatively affecting air quality. Specialized equipment and techniques are always implemented when mitigating mold damage in Durham. After our SERVPRO technicians determine where the growth has taken place, they seal off the affected region with thick plastic and poles.
After the containment chamber is set up a hole gets cut into the side to allow for a machine that helps clean contaminated air. Our SERVPRO specialists attach an air scrubber to the side of the hole in the chamber so that the machine creates negative air pressure inside the contained section. The negative air pressure sucks up any spores and dust particles created by the restoration process. The machine also works to clean or scrub the air inside the contained region.
All of the air that is sucked into the air scrubber gets pulled through a specialized filter. These HEPA filters can trap microscopic particles. In many cases, these systems will stay set up throughout the work process to keep cleaning the air throughout the restoration. In some cases, the air being exhausted out by the air scrubber gets ran to an area that is wet and requires drying.
Plastic sheeting shaped like hoses can be run from the air scrubbers into a tight region such as an attic or crawl space. The air can also be directed into an air mover rapid drying circulation to help their efficiency. If needed, the plastic hoses can run from the air scrubber to the affected area that needs cleaning. This method comes in handy when the contaminated region is in a tight spot such as a closet, attic, or crawl space.
If the air scrubber was placed inside the contaminated region, then it gets HEPA vacuumed and cleaned off with anti-microbial chemicals before leaving the containment chamber. If you ever need assistance with a fungus, call SERVPRO of North Durham at (919) 467-0880 24 hours a day.

Durham's Commercial Water Damage Technicians Discuss Drying
Durham Professionals Turn to SERVPRO for Water Removal from Their Offices and Clinics
Water Extraction and Restoration Results Must Meet Certain Stringent Parameters in Health Care Facilities
If a water leak ever takes places at your doctor's office in Durham, extraction, and drying should take place within 48 hours. If materials inside the office stay wet for longer than 48 hours, mold growth can occur. Since mold can cause health effects, it is essential that microbial growth does not take place in your business due to a water leak.
The first step in the mitigation process is to eliminate any potential hazards and make sure that your doctor's office is safe for your employees and patients. The next step in a commercial water damage project in Durham is the extraction stage. If there are more than two inches of water on the floor of your office, our SERVPRO technicians use submersible pumps to pull the water out of the building into a sewer drain. After that, we use our specialized extraction system to remove moisture out of carpet and upholstery.
Once we extract as much water as we can, the rapid structural drying begins. During this stage, we create an indoor environment that speeds up evaporation and drying. To create this ideal environment, our IICRC certified crew sets up a combination of an air moving system and dehumidifiers.
Depending on the severity of the damage, at times we utilize equipment only during off-hours so that your business can stay open. In the event of contaminated water intrusion from flooding of any sorts, then the doctor's office should be closed until cleaned, disinfected, and okayed for reopening by the local authorities. If drying is necessary during operating hours, then we can work on drying a small section of the building at a time so that patients can still be seen. When equipment is set up, it gets strategically placed in areas that do not disrupt foot traffic.
Before equipment gets placed in your doctor's office, our SERVPRO technicians always establish a drying goal. To figure out when to pull the drying equipment, we first test the relative humidity and materials such as wood and drywall in the affected region. We then use these initial readings to establish what we want the humidity and moisture levels to be at the end of the drying process.
We keep a record of the test results and come back each day the equipment is set up and take humidity and moisture content readings. Once the relative humidity and moisture content levels inside the wood and drywall reach the initially desired and recorded goal, our technicians remove the air movers and dehumidifiers. For professional assistance with structural drying at your office, call SERVPRO of North Durham at (919) 467-0880 any day of the week.

The appliance can create a good bit of water damage to your Durham home, and the longer you take to act, the more damage is done. It is the main reason why at SERVPRO, our staff is ready to help you at any time with a water disaster. Our training and tools assist us in cleaning up the mess in your home promptly.
Once we have removed any standing water, part of the drying process is achieved by using dehumidifiers. These machines are used to pull water vapor from the air and lower the relative humidity. As moisture is evaporated, the dehumidifier keeps removing it from the air until your home and contents are dry.
Dehumidifiers are rated by how many gallons of water they can remove from a particular space in twenty-four hours at 80 degrees Fahrenheit and 60 percent relative humidity. They operate best within a specific temperature range. Usually, the higher the temperature and relative humidity, the more efficient the dehumidifier. To increase the efficiency of refrigerant dehumidifiers, SERVPRO techs heat the area to temperatures between sixty-eight and ninety degrees Fahrenheit.
There are three types of dehumidifiers that we use for water damage restoration. These include low grain refrigerant, refrigerant, and desiccant. In this way, we can select the right machine depending on the situation and area we are drying.
SERVPRO of North Durham has industrial equipment to help dry your home in Weaver, Gorman, or Rougemont after a water damage emergency. Therefore, when a problem arises, it is always best to call us at (919) 467-0880 so that we can help you out, rather than you trying to do the job yourself.

Durham's Fire Damage Restoration Services
Cleaning and Restoring Possessions and Structures Are Cornerstones of SERVPRO Services in the Durham Area
SERVPRO Offers Cleanup and Restoration for Durham Properties Post House Fires
Any time something burns inside your Durham home, multiple types of damage can take place. Some materials get burnt so severely that they must get removed and replaced. Other items get partially charred so that they need to get resurfaced and repainted.
Smoke created by the fire often travels to various rooms inside the house leaving behind soils and soot residues. SERVPRO's fire damage technicians in Durham offer a variety of services related to smoke and soot restoration. The full restoration process after a blaze requires following several steps.
The first type of service that gets performed after a house burns is mitigation. The goal of mitigation is to secure the structure and prevent further damage. Mitigation includes boarding up windows and emergency drying any water damage that occurred. For large scale building security outside contractors can be called in for those actions.
Next, structural cleaning takes place. The purpose of this step is to remove smoke damage from all components and deodorize them. In some scenarios, cleaning contents occurs when items are severely smoke damaged. Sometimes contents get cleaned on the job site other times they get transported to another location to get cleaned and deodorized. SERVPRO offers an excellent pack-out, storage, and rehabilitation service.
In certain situations, specialty restoration services get used to restore specific items. Some contents that need specialists to restore include electronics, dry cleaning of clothing, and resurfacing of furniture. At times artwork requires particular attention to restore to original conditions and can be sent out to a specialized company that excels at this cleaning.
In many scenarios, reconstruction takes place as a final step in the restoration process. In cases of severe fire damage, building contents get burned to the point of becoming non-salvageable. After all burnt materials get removed, the area is painted with a sealant paint so that any remaining foul odors get masked and encapsulated. Then the structural components get rebuilt which at times is more complicated than basic home remodeling.
The final goal of any fire restoration process is to bring the home back to preloss conditions whenever possible. For professional assistance with fire restorations services, call SERVPRO of North Durham at (919) 467-0880 seven days a week.

SERVPRO Works Quickly to Restore Your Business for Minimal Interruption
If a pipe breaks inside your Durham gift shop, many problems possibly occur. The existence of water sometimes causes your products or building materials to get damaged. In some cases, water creates hazards for your employees and customers and disrupts business operations.
If moisture lingers too long, foul odors and mold growth possibly occurs. SERVPRO's commercial water damage technicians in Durham have experience in restoring problems without having to shut down your business. Many times we complete our operations differently so that the functions of your gift shop are not interrupted.
From the minute our IICRC certified technicians show up on the scene, we are continually thinking about ways to complete the work without hindering your business. When we first secure the work area, we do it in a way that helps keep your gift shop functioning. We make sure any hazards for your employees and customers get fixed, or the areas get blocked off and labeled with "danger" signs.
Next, we extract all of the water out of the building that we possibly can. The extraction process sometimes gets done in small sections at a time so that we only have to close your shop down a portion at a time. After our SERVPRO technicians are confident that we cannot pull out any more moisture with our extraction equipment, we begin the drying process.
Before we start drying the structure, we test the temperature, relative humidity and moisture content of materials in the affected room or rooms. We then set up air movers and dehumidifiers in the region so that air flows in a circular motion. The dry-out process gets sometimes completed after business hours. Other times we dry out the building in a small portion at a time and move your products around so that we only close off part of your shop.
The combination of air flow and dehumidification speeds up evaporation and pulls moisture out of the air. The drying equipment stays set up until relative humidity, and moisture levels return to preloss conditions. Once we are satisfied with the moisture levels of building materials, we pull out drying equipment making sure that we do not get in your customers' way.
After the desired moisture levels get reached, the final cleaning and deodorization process begins. To make sure your business' mitigation project gets done the right way, call SERVPRO of North Durham at (919) 467-0880 for help anytime.

Commercial Water Removal Professionals Work Quickly To Restore Home Daycare Centers In Durham
Some situations affecting your Durham home daycare might require commercial water removal services to make everything “Like it never even happened.”
Commercial Water Removal
Providing daily care in your Durham home to children while their parents work means that you must always keep your home well-maintained. A small situation involving water can become a much larger one in a matter of merely a few minutes and cause severe problems for you and your business.
Some situations affecting your Durham home daycare might require commercial water removal services to make everything “Like it never even happened.” When it does, SERVPRO technicians can provide the services needed to adequately mitigate the situation adequately, meaning you stay in business. These include more than just removing the water but also eliminating the moisture in your home's materials and the humidity in the air. Pumping out visible water alone can leave much water behind, and this can lead to microbial growth, water stains, deteriorating carpeting and rugs, loosened wallpapers and borders, and a musty odor - all avoidable problems.
To prevent these situations from becoming a reality and affecting your business, we use the latest developments in restoration science. Because heat speeds up the process of evaporation, we use heaters that radiate warmth as well as floor mats that increase the temperature underneath them and then extract the evaporating moisture. When we expect favorable weather conditions, we open up doors and windows. Air blowers can move air currents so that humidity leaves your daycare home. Restoring dryness remains one of the industry's primary methods of preventing microbial infestation without the use of chemicals or other agents.
However, smells can remain, and our Odor Control Technician (OCT) can make everything smell as it should once again. Other permanent evidence of water damage that can appear includes water stains on upper walls and ceilings. We can test for the presence of moisture with our water meters and then proceed accordingly.
Because accidents that can close your business can happen anytime and come from both within and outside your home, we recommend that all businesses, regardless of their size, sign up for our READY Plan. The faster a business can recover from a disaster, the higher its chances of succeeding in the long run. If you need assistance completing a Plan, we welcome your phone call. We want businesses of all sizes to succeed in our community, including yours.
SERVPRO of North Durham can help you with water removal services, as well as other mitigations services, as needed. Keeping your business suitable and safe for children means a lot to us. Contact us at (919) 467-0880, anytime, and any day of the year.

Learn to Prevent and Mitigate Bathroom Fire Damage Incidents in Durham
Your bathroom's exhaust fan can accumulate lint and easily catch fire leaving your bathroom and home in need of fire damage restoration services.
Trust SERVPRO to Fully Restore Your Home after Fire Damage
Bathroom fire damage incidents are on the rise and data from the fire department can prove that as a fact. Most of these fires occur when the exhaust fans that we install in our bathroom malfunction for one reason or the other. Their work is to prevent mirrors from steaming up, dealing with fogged windows, and stopping damp walls. Sometimes they can prove vital when removing unpleasant smells. Useful as they are, they are a fire hazard to your Durham property.
As the fan runs over an extended period, lint and dust settles on it and insulates its motor. The insulation causes heat to build-up, and any spark can quickly ignite the lint. Within a short time, the fire can spread to any combustible material that is nearby, such as cosmetic towels. That is why our SERVPRO team advises you to clean the bathroom exhaust vent and tile walls where dust is likely to settle to prevent fire damage to your Durham home. Additionally, when your fan develops heat damage, you should consider making a replacement. It is also a good practice to turn off the fan when you are not using the bathroom.
We encourage you to work with our SERVPRO technicians when your property suffers fire damage. We know your structure requires a thorough cleaning, but we first perform a pretest before settling on appropriate restoration procedures. In situations where there are lighter soot deposits, repainting and refinishing might be unnecessary. Deep soot deposits may force us to prepare the area for repainting.
Normally, smoke leaves behind unpleasant odors that our SERVPRO technicians work towards eliminating. By using thermal foggers in a process known as deodorization, we can dispense deodorants that have odor-neutralizing properties. We also perform move-outs when we believe your contents are likely to get additional damage while the restoration work is in progress.
SERVPRO of North Durham is an industry leader that offers both commercial and residential cleaning and restoration services. Call us at (919) 467-0880 and get served by highly qualified technicians.

When You Find Mold Damage in Your Durham Home
Your basement conditions need to be controlled to prevent mold from forming and then spreading. Contact SERVPRO to discuss remediation.
Team SERVPRO Quickly Investigates the Cause and Extent of the Mold Infestation in Your Home
When you think about the basements that you have walked through in your life, you start to picture them all as dark and damp spaces underneath a house. Many homes rarely even use this area because of its often-high humid environment and the difficulty of keeping it as clean as you can other floors of the house. One of the problems with disregarding this area of your Durham home is the possibility that its moisture and higher heats through certain times of the year could allow for the growth of mold and fungi.
When it comes to mold damage in your Durham home, it is not a scenario that should get overlooked and left without remediation. The longer that fungal growths get permitted to grow without opposition, the more out of control and widespread they can become. It is common knowledge now that mold can cause health effects for you and your family once exposed to mold colonies growing in the house, so it is a scenario that demands your attention and should get rectified as quickly as you can.
Fortunately, our SERVPRO team gets expertly trained to the highest of professional standards set forth by the IICRC for mold remediation and removal of all types of fungal colonies that the team could encounter. It is with these high standards that we perform every aspect of mold remediation to your home, from preventative measures to keep the spores from spreading to the removal of present colonies in the affected areas.
When we arrive at your home, our assessment of the mold damage present gets underway immediately. Once we have determined the full extent, we can contain this area with the use of negative air chambers (to prevent the spread of spores) and through shutting down air circulation throughout your home through the remediation process. Our SERVPRO professionals can then utilize scrubbers to thoroughly clean surfaces and materials housing mold colonies until they have gotten entirely removed.
Our process gets completed when our team has remediated the mold damage to your home and remedied the present issue of moisture in the area to prevent this problem from recurring. Useful Information About Fire Damage For Durham Residents
Durham Flames and Odors Are Components of a SERVPRO Cleanup and Restoration
By Relying on SERVPRO Your Durham Property Gets the Best Cleanup and Restoration Possible
If your property suffers a fire damage incident, you need to act fast to mitigate the damage and return it to its preloss state. At this time, quick inspection is necessary to know what you need to repair and what is salvageable. If you work with professionals in Durham, then there are high chances of having a quick recovery.
Timing is crucial when dealing with a fire damage incident in your Durham property. When the cleanup starts immediately, you stand a better chance of avoiding permanent damage and salvaging most of the items. It explains why most restoration companies like SERVPRO work 24 hours a day and readily respond if you give them a call. Remember these are emergencies which you should not take for granted.
One of the first things that our technicians do when you call them is to perform a fire testing and assessment. We conduct this process in every room as we check item by item to assess their degree of damage. The breadth of this inspection is dependent upon the degree (no pun intended) of the damage. At this point, we identify the fire type and select the most suitable cleaning method. It is the stage where we determine what should be replaced and what is salvageable as we do a complete inventory that covers all your contents. We do stress that you as the customer, and your insurance adjuster if applicable, make the final decision on tossing materials and possessions.
The next step that our SERVPRO team performs is fire mitigation. It involves protecting the unaffected locations and where necessary treating any metallic materials in the site so that they do not suffer permanent damage as a result of acidic soot. Additionally, we remove any charred contents from the area and perform HVAC cleaning. We also determine whether there is a need to pack out some of your items to prevent possible damage and for off-site cleaning.
To eliminate the odors that are common after a fire, our SERVPRO technicians neutralize them through deodorization. Apparently, not all the smells come from the same source, and that means we have to identify the causes and remove them where possible. We usually use thermal foggers or Ultra Low Volume Foggers when dispensing the deodorizing agents into the target locations. For mechanical methods of changing the structural components of odors we can also use hydroxyl and ozone generators.
SERVPRO of North Durham responds to storm, mold, fire and water damage disasters irrespective of their size. Call us at (919) 467-0880 at any time of the day and be served by a trusted industry leader.

Professional Water Damage Restoration Services in North Durham
Water Cleanup by SERVPRO Mitigates Damages to North Durham Properties
SERVPRO Can Restore North Durham Properties After Water Intrusions and Leaks
Water damage is a serious problem that can interfere with the comfort and convenience of home. This challenge may be as a result of flooding or a slight continuous leak that can ultimately lead to much moisture finding its way into your house.
It is essential for residents to secure the input of an experienced water damage company in Durham such as SERVPRO. Our competent team of technicians can implement several initiatives meant to remove all the water that has accessed your home.
Our SERVPRO technicians usually start by identifying the source of the water and stop it to prevent any further damage, if it is minor and had not yet been done. Secondly, our technicians can deploy various types of water extraction equipment including truck mounted pumps depending on the quantity of water that has flowed into your house.
To get rid of the water that has leaked into the carpet, SERVPRO technicians use specialized extraction wands that are designed to handle such complicated water removal tasks. The quality of your carpeting is something that our technicians take into account and to this end, and then we use the most appropriate power settings for the wands. Sometimes, it can be challenging to introduce equipment in some restricted regions within your house such as small spaces between walls. In such scenarios, we use air movers to pump warm air into such areas, and this aids the extraction of moisture through evaporation. Small holes may be drilled by the baseboard area to force warm air into the wall cavity to enhance the evaporation rate and drying time.
Once we have been able to get rid of the water that has leaked into your home, we have to ensure that the humidity levels are within the acceptable range. The SERVPRO team uses dehumidifiers to address the issue of excess moisture, and then measure results compared to the baseline readings when the job was started. Upon completion, you can feel "Like it never even happened."
In case you experience water damage, please go ahead and contact SERVPRO of North Durham at (919) 467-0880. We also respond immediately to residents of Gorman and Rougemont.

Stress-Free Options for Commercial Fire Damage Disasters in Durham
Commercial fire damage requires professional mitigation services to ensure your space is safe after a fire.
Rely on SERVPRO for Professional and Efficient Commercial Fire Damage Restoration Services
It is rare to find a business that is always prepared to face commercial fire damage disasters. Though you might have the necessary gear in place, like fire extinguishers, there are cases where such facilities might not be enough to prevent the unpredictable fires. That is why as a factory or shop owner in Durham you need to call certified restorers to help you mitigate the damage that results whenever such disasters strike.
Commercial fire damage disasters are unique and stressful, but that does not mean the end for your Durham business. You might end up making a big mistake if you assume all is safe after a fire has been put off. Even when the items have not been directly affected by the fumes, the soot residues can still contaminate them to some degree. Additionally, when the gases mix with moisture oxidation occurs and that starts corrosion. That is why you need to work with our qualified SERVPRO technicians to avoid making costly mistakes.
Our SERVPRO team understands the processes that follow when combustion takes place. Once we visit your premises, our technicians inspect the extent of the damage and formulate the various procedures to use during the restoration. Where necessary, we can provide your adjuster with the entire scope of the loss as well as the cost of the repairs. Our operations always abide by the local and state regulations.
Returning your contents to their preloss state is the aim of our SERVPRO restoration procedures. Our first inspection begins typically from the point where the fire started from, and then we go ahead and analyze how the smoke particles have penetrated. We understand that different fires leave behind different residues and thus we choose an appropriate cleaning agent when cleaning the mess.
Given that we have differing smoke residues, it is understandable to expect several odors with each having different sources. The small size of odor particles may make them penetrate surfaces easily. The rate of penetration can be high when there is heat, and the surface is porous. To prevent the unpleasant smells that they cause, we use deodorizing agents to control their effects.

Restoration Technicians Repair Flood Damage in Gorman After the Storm
One common cause of storm damage is when the area floods and water leaks into your home.
Rely on SERVPRO When a Storm Leaves Your Home Damaged
Recently, mother nature has proven that she can be a little cruel sometimes. Giant storms have been occurring more often to the point where nobody is 100% safe. No matter what type of storm it is, if/when it hits your Gorman neighborhood, damage to your home is always a possibility. All of the most devastating types of storms including hurricanes, tornadoes, and thunderstorms bring with them high wind speeds and lots of rain.
Once the bad weather passes, it is a good idea to have the pros inspect your home for any damage. SERVPRO has years of experience with flood damage in Gorman. Sometimes damage caused by a storm is noticed even inside the house. Other times mother nature's wrath can damage your roof or exterior of your house, and you may not realize it until it has caused extensive damage to the interior of your home.
A common cause of damage in a storm is when the area gets flooded, and water starts to leak into the house. Alternatively, a branch could blow into your house and poke a hole in your wall or roof right in the middle of a torrential downpour of rain. Once an excessive amount of water gets inside your home, the damage must be quickly mitigated before the water causes more problems in the house.
Shortly after every big storm, our water damage crews at SERVPRO respond to a number of houses that suffer storm damage. As soon as a restoration crew shows up at the house, their first mission is to determine the source of the water and try to stop it from flowing into the house. Next, the crew uses an advanced water extraction system to pull as much of the moisture out of the house as possible.
Depending on the severity of the damage, extracting the water and stopping the source may not be enough. Our certified technicians use moisture sensors to see how wet the drywall or wood in the area got. If moisture levels are still too high after all of the water has been extracted, the next phase is drying. Our mitigation team uses air movers and dehumidifiers in the area of damage to dry out the wood and carpet before any mold has a chance to grow.
As long as storm damage is assessed by professionals promptly, the havoc wreaked upon your home will not get worse. If you think there is even a chance that the last storm damaged your house, contact us at SERVPRO of North Durham at (919) 467-0880 for 24/7 assistance.

Fire Damage and Soot Cleanup from Electrical Incidents in Durham
Sooty Residue from an Electrical Fire in a Durham Home Gets Cleaned up by SERVPRO
Light Bulbs, Furnaces, and Wiring Often Are the Culprits Causing Home Fire & Smoke Damage
Common reasons for electrical fires in Durham can include light bulbs, lamps, and light fixtures. Installing a light bulb that has a wattage too high for the fixture or lamp you are putting it in is a leading cause of electrical fires. Be sure to check the minimum recommended wattage on any lamp or fixture and do not go above the recommended amount. Sometimes, a fire occurs when a paper or cloth is placed over a lampshade; the material heats up and ignites.
A fire in your Durham home from a faulty light fixture or bulb can cause a lot of fire damage fast. Hopefully, it was contained in the room it began in, but even then, you still have smoke and soot possibly in other areas of the home which needs to be cleaned. A SERVPRO crew is always here to help you in the event of an emergency, as we have the equipment and training needed to help you recover from a fire.
Not all soot residue is the same. Some kinds are easier to clean than others, and our technicians are trained to clean the four main types – wet, dry, fuel oil, or protein smoke residues. More kinds of materials are restorable in dry smoke conditions than wet. Dry residues carry few aerosols and deposit dry, small particles on surfaces. Dry smoke does not stain surfaces as deeply, either, and the odor is less pungent. Therefore, we need less aggressive cleaning procedures to get rid of dry smoke residues.
Wet smoke residues are harder to remove, so restoration is more difficult as well. A higher proportion of aerosols like solvents, varnishes, and other liquid components are in wet smoke. Wet smoke also moves slowly, so it has more time to get into crevices and enclosed areas.
For a fire like this, protein residues and fuel oil soot are likely not present. Protein residues mainly come from kitchen fires, while fuel oil soot happens after a furnace puff-back. The cleanup of spiderweb-like residues on the ceilings and walls needs professional help to limit smearing.
SERVPRO of North Durham is trained in cleaning all kinds of soot and smoke residues. No matter the type of fire you had in your home in Chester, Upland, and Orange Factory, we can clean and restore your home when you call us at (919) 467-0880.

Rebuilding After Mold Damage in Durham
SERVPRO technicians have the training, experience, and special tools to remediate mold damage and restore your home to its original condition.
Rely on SERVPRO Technicians to Restore Your Home after Severe Mold Damage Takes its Toll on Walls and Flooring
Many homeowners in Durham and elsewhere in North Carolina, have a poor understanding of what causes mold. Many citizens have the idea that mold only shows up in homes where the owners are unclean or keep a dirty house. That idea is completely untrue.
SERVPRO understands that mold damage in Durham homes can happen at any time of year, regardless of housekeeping. Mold spores are harmless until they have enough water to expand and begin growing. The mold sends out hyphae to find food. These structures look like capillaries and serve a similar function, sending food and moisture to the growth to expand. When this mold colony goes undetected for too long, it can cause health effects for some people and destroy a home as surely as a fire or flood.
In extreme cases, after we remove the mold, we perform an additional inspection to determine the extent of the damage and what tools our restoration team needs. For abandoned or unoccupied homes, it is not unusual to bring in jacks and lifts to preserve structural integrity while our team replaces wall framing, load-bearing walls, columns, and other support structures.
With the walls not threatening to collapse on them, the team begins on the floor. We remove and dispose of every carpet, then examine the wood floor underneath. Unless the homeowner is insistent on preserving uncontaminated floorboards, it is cheaper for SERVPRO technicians to remove and dispose of it. If there is concrete underneath the carpet, we spray an anti-fungal agent on the pad and stretch new carpet after the cleaner dries.
Finally, we move to the roof. Since mold can grow in any direction, it is not unusual to find it went up walls and spread across the attic. In unoccupied homes, it can easily grow across roof panels and tiles. Depending on how extensive the damage is, demolishing and replacement can take from several days to a couple of weeks.
Mold can appear in any home, regardless if it has been occupied for generations or empty for a couple of years. To remove it and replace the damage is a process that requires training, special tools, and experience. For details on how we can preserve and rebuild your home, call SERVPRO of North Durham today at (919) 467-0880. We are here to help.

Water Removal in Durham
Toilets always overflow and cause damage at the wrong time. Contact SERVPRO should such an event cause damage in your home.
SERVPRO Remediates Water Damage From Your Home in Stages
Storms strike our area, but Durham is not prone to flooding from rainwater of rising creeks. Most of the water issues in our community result from a split washer hose in the garage or a rusted out water heater in the hallway.
No matter if the need for water removal in Durham comes from a broken toilet or a broken levee, the result needs to be taken care of immediately. SERVPRO has over twenty years of experience in North Carolina and can remove any amount of water, regardless of how high or low the level.
First, we have to get rid of the standing water. With pumps and water extraction wands, we can remove about ninety percent of the water within a day in any home. Our equipment is commercial grade and tested regularly. If there is an issue with the power, we also have an extensive inventory of generators to provide uninterrupted electrical support for as long as we need it.
Now, we use the extraction wands to draw out water from the carpets and wood floors. Technicians reduce the power on the wands to prevent damaging the nape of the carpet and surface of the wood. We immediately dispose of any pad under the carpet. They begin to disintegrate within an hour or two after exposure to flood water and are cheaper to replace than restore.
With the visible water removed, SERVPRO technicians examine any crawlspaces and sub-floors. If we find more than a trace of moisture, we use the extraction wands to draw it out. If we cannot use them effectively, then the restoration team uses air movers to force warm, dry air into the space to increase evaporation.
Finally, our technicians remove water from the air. High humidity is uncomfortable and encourages mold growth. To draw down the humidity, we set up dehumidifiers in the rooms with the highest percentage of moisture content. Each machine draws out 20 gallons of water each day from the surrounding air.
Using all of these removal methods, we can return most homes to their pre-flood condition in just a few days. If you are dealing with a flooded home, duplex, or apartment complex, contact SERVPRO of North Durham at (919) 467-0880 to help you put everything back the way it was, or as we prefer to say; "Like it never even happened."

Various hazards can present themselves in a flood damage emergency, which includes electrical ones. Water conducts electricity, so mixing the two can be disastrous. Electrical hazards can potentially be anywhere on the job site, as floods can cause water to enter the wiring system.
The first thing SERVPRO staff checks is the power distribution box. We turn off all circuit breakers. If only part of your home is affected, we turn the circuits off for the areas which are damaged. If water is inside wall cavities or electrical outlets, this step is especially important. We may even need to have a licensed electrician to do an inspection.
Sometimes we may need to turn off the power source where it enters your home. The power can be turned off at a meter found outside. Turning off the source of power at a meter could require assistance from the local power provider or utility company. We use a generator if the electrical system is considered unsafe at this point and no other form of power is available.
In a wet environment, using electrical equipment to clean up the mess requires using Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters. We always ensure the ground plugs are unbroken and cords have no cuts, frays, or nicks.
SERVPRO of North Durham wants to ensure that our staff and your family are safe during the remediation process, which is why we follow these safety precautions when it comes to electricity and water. If you reside in the areas of Bahama, Orange Factory, or Gorman and experience a flood emergency, you can rest assure in knowing this when you call us at (919) 467-0880 for help.

SERVPRO Reduces Water Losses with Fast Extraction and Restoration
After a home takes on water of any kind, drastic changes begin to take place. Homeowners in Durham can protect their homes from the damage these changes cause by having qualified professionals carry out the necessary services. One small crisis can bring about a multitude of problems.
Durham property owners often rely on professional water removal services to dry their homes out when saturation is an issue. Unwanted water can come from interior or exterior flooding or firefighting efforts. Large amounts of water on floors or heavily saturated walls and attics need to be removed and extracted until achievement of complete dryness in your home occurs.
SERVPRO uses the latest in technology not only to remove the water in your home but also to find hidden areas with water and moisture. Elevated humidity can also create problems, and we have solutions for that kind of situation, as well. Hygrometers and moisture detectors help us locate areas where water seeped into, even when it feels dry to the touch.
Determined by the location and the material affected, we might use only hand-held and highly portable extraction units, heating pads for floors, air blowers, or full-size pumps mounted on large trucks. Combining any of these, along with air scrubbers, dehumidifiers, and desiccant machines, our technicians steadily, but quickly, dry your home's interior. Other restorative work cannot begin while conditions remain damp.
Whenever flooding includes contaminated water, we ensure that not only do we eliminate all the water but that we also remove any pathogens or chemical residues. We put our skills to work so we leave each home or business “Like it never even happened.” Failing to remove all the water can set your property up for future problems with mold, deterioration, and destruction of materials, foul odors, insect and other pest problems.
The skilled professionals at SERVPRO of North Durham want to help you protect your home. Water removal services help prevent other problems from developing inside your residence. Because water damages from the first second it touches your home, contacting us at our local number, (919) 467-0880, can reduce total restoration costs while mitigating loss.

Odor Control For Your Durham Home After A Fire
Odor control goes a long way after your Durham home has suffered fire damage.
Even a small fire in your Durham home leaves behind various types of damage to clean up. You not only have to deal with what the flames burned, but you likely have water from the firefighters who helped put the fire out, and you have smoke and soot damage. It is not wise to leave any of it lingering for long before restoration is started, as more damage continues to occur.
Odor control goes a long way after your Durham home has suffered fire damage. At SERVPRO, we have the training and skills necessary to perform odor control thoroughly and correctly so that the smoke odors are no longer present in your home.
Various techniques are used in controlling odors. There are multiple phases to an odor control system. The first phase is called containment. Our goal is to block or contain odor molecules from vaporizing back into the air. We spray a chemical deodorizer onto materials causing the odor. The chemical makes a barrier that slows down or stops odor molecules from evaporation off the source material. We directly spray the smoke residues on charred areas with an odor counteractant using a pump-up sprayer.
The next phase is vapor control. SERVPRO techs counteract odor particles which became airborne before the spraying for containment. We apply products made to release deodorant vapors into the atmosphere. They counteract the malodor vapors they contact in the air. Vapor control is quite effective in fire damage cases.
The last phase of odor control is thermal fogging. We dispense solvent-based deodorants using thermal fogging equipment. They pass through a heated area and are combusted. Combustion breaks the deodorant solution down into very small particles. Because of the small size, the particles can go anywhere the malodor particles are pair with the malodor and neutralize it by changing the chemical composition. Dry fogs quickly penetrate and deodorize because of the small particle size. Most of it evaporates within a few hours. The last thing we do in the fogging procedure is ventilate the treated area.
SERVPRO of North Durham can come quickly after your home has suffered a from a fire. We can clean and repair all the damages for residents in the areas of Bahama, Durham, and Gorman, plus deodorize the smoke odors left behind when you give us a call at (919) 467-0880.

SERVPRO Has The Proper Fire Damage Equipment and Technology To Restore Your Durham Property
Some Durham businesses recover quickly from a fire, able to restock and move on after a quick cleaning. A wood-burning oven sparked a kitchen blaze, and fire damage spread throughout your Durham brew pub. SERVPRO is capable of responding to a broad range of restoration concerns simultaneously, with technicians who have training in industry best practices for fire and smoke damage as well as water damage, which is frequently a challenge at a fire scene.
The SERVPRO project manager assigned to your crisis discusses your options honestly and keeps your insurance company apprised. Any water damage is abated first, as the clock starts ticking on secondary issues like microbial growth, which could be devastating for your beer and ale production. Other crew members begin work cleaning soot and chemical extinguisher residue, systematically working their ways through the kitchen, dining area, and brewery.
Safety concerns about food and drink stored within the premises merit discussion with experienced SERVPRO supervisors. Heat and smoky debris can compromise the contents of even sealed and refrigerated containers, including cans, bottles, kegs, and tanks of your artisanal brews. Any food stored in areas where firefighting occurred are likely tainted with the effluents from chemical extinguishers or water.
Your brewery, with all its equipment, require evaluation after the fire to ensure that smoke, soot, heat, or water did no permanent damage. Proper Water Removal and Dehumidifying in Your Durham Home
Water can flood from a broken pipe or come in through a roof or window. Regardless of how it came in, contact SERVPRO for remediation and prevention.
Our Technicians Carefully Assess the Situation and Calculate the Amount of Equipment Needed to Efficiently Dry Out Your Property After Water Damage
From damaged pipes to excess rain, flooding can wreak havoc on your belongings and your home. Even though it always happens when you least expect it, your reaction time is what is critical during an emergency like this. You need water removal in Durham fast, which means you need professional help as well.
The water removal experts at SERVPRO should be the first ones you call. We can arrive at your Durham home fast with powerful, industrial equipment which extracts the water from your home as quickly as possible. When carpeting has been affected, we need to take special care that it is dried thoroughly to prevent mold growth underneath the padding where it is not visible.
One piece of equipment that SERVPRO technicians use to dry out your home and carpeting again is dehumidifiers. We consider both the capacity of the dehumidifier and the nature of the environment to figure out the requirements needed for your situation. One factor that we look at is how many absorbent or porous materials are present, such as your carpeting. The more porous materials that are present, the more moisture has been absorbed and evaporates into the air. In a case like this, we need more dehumidification to balance the evaporation.
We then calculate the dehumidifier capacity, so we know exactly what equipment we need for the job. Once this is done, and the drying process continues into additional days, we increase or decrease the amount of drying equipment based on monitoring the air conditioning in your home and the moisture content readings of the wet carpeting and your structure.
Each situation is different, and the amount of carpeting is present and how long it was saturated makes a difference. The real measure of a balanced drying system when we monitor is how fast your structure and contents are drying. If the moisture levels are lowering and the relative humidity is moving downwards at a steady pace, the system is working. If the humidity is high and the moisture content of the carpeting and other materials is not reducing, we need to examine the situation to determine a more efficient system of drying.
As you can see, SERVPRO of North Durham monitors our machines closely on a daily basis. You can, therefore, be sure that once you call us at (919) 467-0880 in the areas of Bahama, Gorman, and Durham, your home is restored to its original condition before the water removal emergency.

Restoration Of Your Home After Flood Damage Overtakes Durham
Flooding from natural sources can impose hardships on homeowners no matter where it happens.
Your Home After A Flood
Flooding from natural sources can impose hardships on homeowners no matter where it happens. Durham residents might see problems when Falls Lake overflows, or from hurricane-related storms. Flooding can occur in an instant and then take months for property owners to repair and restore.
When weather plays a heavy hand and floods areas of Durham, flood damage affects more than the family home. Life seems to focus on restoring the damaged home instead of normal living activities. Work can also suffer tremendously while adults attempt to compensate for the time now spent on replacing children's belongings, reassuring them that everything can go back to how they remember, and a multitude of other activities that sap energy but suddenly become extremely important.
Our technicians understand how difficult everything seems to become after a disaster. We help families affected by flooding and other disasters every day. SERVPRO employees receive training that helps them earn certificates from the IICRC.
The studying and coursework behind these certificates include:
• Microorganisms and how they live and function.
• How materials inside a home become damaged in different situations and the best ways to counteract that damage via restoration and repair techniques or closely matched replacement materials.
• The best methods for working in various situations so that we always remain out of the way while continuing the restoration processes required.
The process involved in making your home “Like it never even happened” after a flood can entail a broad range of activities. Each one is important and performing it helps your home come closer toward total restoration. Drying out, thorough cleaning, removal of earthy debris and garbage, elimination of viable microbes, and disposal of items destroyed by flood waters either through contamination or contact with the water can take time to accomplish. Because SERVPRO employees work as a team, we reduce the amount of time it takes from the time we arrive to when we complete the final details of the restoration work on your family's home.
Regardless of the severity of flood damage affecting your neighborhood, SERVPRO of North Durham has the tools, equipment, skills, and experience to restore your family's residence quickly and professionally. Contact us at (919) 467-0880 any hour of the day or night so we can begin assessing the damage and rectifying the situation.

Mold Damage Removal Services in Durham
Whether mold is visible or you just smell its prescence, you know it's time to call SERVPRO for remediation services.
Technicians From SERVPRO Begin the Mold Remediation Process by an Investigation to Deduce the Source of the Damage
Mold growth can become a serious problem in Durham in the presence of moisture. It can spread throughout your property in just 48 hours, leading to various health effects and structural damage to your home. Any visible mold growth above 10 SF (about 3' x 3') requires a certified mold remediation company to eliminate following IICRC standards and guidelines.
If you have a mold situation in your Durham home, SERVPRO can safely and effectively reverse the mold damage. As mold remediation professionals, we use industry-standard tools and equipment and apply systematic practices to eradicate mold growth on any surface. Once we locate the mold and treat it, we also perform a complete water damage remediation to prevent future growth when we leave.
Mold removal preserves the structural integrity of your home and protects the health of your family. The process also helps control the damp, musty smell that comes with mold. Since moisture is a vital part of mold growth, SERVPRO technicians assume the responsibility of cleaning up excess water in the house as well. Failure to fix the moisture problem could cause the mold to return again, even after cleaning the area thoroughly.
Given that mold is a living organism that deeply integrates into materials for survival, the best way to deal with porous items is disposing of them. For nonporous materials, SERVPRO mold remediation specialists can disinfect the surfaces using antimicrobial cleaners. We also have effective sealants that can make the areas more water resistant and, subsequently, more mold-proof. It is best to have your air conditioning and heating systems professionally cleaned too.
Safety is important in mold damage control. As such, SERVPRO professionals always wear waterproof gloves during the cleanup process and advise occupants not to touch moldy items with bare hands. We use respiratory protection in most mold remediation situations to avoid inhalation, which may cause certain health effects. The reconstruction process begins after removing all mold-contaminated materials and then replacing them with clean, non-contaminated ones.
Mold damage remediation requires trained and experienced personnel to ensure clean indoor air for your family. As a trusted and experienced restoration company in your community, SERVPRO of North Durham is already nearby and ready to respond to your emergency. We have an extensive stock of resources for dealing with large restoration projects. Call us today (919) 467-0880.

Water Removal Services for Your Durham Home After a Storm
It is important to remove the water from your home after a storm as quickly as possible to prevent further damage.
Steps to Successful and Thorough Water Removal
Flooding in the home causes some initial damage to items like books, magazines, and other paper items. Fabric (drapes and upholstered furniture) is another item that can suffer damage quickly before any restoration work can begin. Preventing permanent, more expensive damage soon becomes the objective.
When it comes to water removal for a North Durham home, time is critical. Just as important is removing it without causing further damage to the home. At SERVPRO, we have two goals: Minimize the damage that has already happened and get the water out before more damage can occur.
Our first step is to stop more water coming into the home. If the source is coming from a broken pipe or appliance, we turn off the water leading into the home. It stops the flow and gives our technicians the opportunity to find the leak if we have not been able to yet. If it is from outside (backed up storm drains for example), we try to block it using sandbags or otherwise redirect it.
Now, we bring in pumps to remove standing water. These commercial grade machines work quickly on water over two inches in depth. Once the water is low enough that we can see the carpet clearly, we replace the pumps with water extraction wands. These specially designed water vacuums draw water out of carpets and from between floorboards without damaging either.
If the power in the home remains off because water got into the outlets or the local power was knocked out, we augment these devices with our generators. For larger jobs, we have generator trucks that can be parked onsite to provide all the power we need for 24-hour operations if needed.
With a large amount of water removed, we pull up the carpets and remove the carpet pads. These items are challenging to dry, and it is not cost effective to do so. Once they are gone, technicians may use water extraction wands again to remove remaining, small amounts of water, but in most cases, we introduce air movers and fans to dry the surface.
For wood flooring, SERVPRO checks the sub-floor for moisture and standing water. We try to pull up a small piece of the floor to insert a hose connected to a pump to drain water or an air mover to force warm air into this space to dry moisture that a pump or extractor cannot remove. When needed, our IICRC-certified technicians may use an exhaust fan on floors (and carpets) to help draw out the damp air.
Quickly removing water is the first step to restoring your home after a flood. SERVPRO of North Durham is fully trained and equipped to stop ongoing problems and prevent more damage from adding to an already stressful situation. To schedule an inspection or if you just have a question, call today at (919) 467-0880. We are here for you.

We use a combination of air movers and dehumidifiers to dry out every corner of your diner, including the pantry, kitchen, between shelves, around furniture, and anywhere else that moisture lingers. SERVPRO Tackles Storm Flood Damage in Durham With Air Movers and Dehumidifiers
Flooding after a storm can be overwhelming. After you and your family have reached safety, contact SERVPRO for remediation efforts.
Our Certified Technicians Assess the Damage and Put Together an Effective Remediation Plan
North Carolina residents know all too well the devastation storms can wreak. A severe storm can damage property, even flip houses, and of course, there is also the issue of flood damage from storm water. In the event of flood water entering your home, it is a good idea to get in touch with SERVPRO as soon as you can. We have the equipment and skilled technicians on hand to get your home liveable again as soon as possible.
One important aspect of flood damage remediation in Durham is the drying process. Our teams arrive at the scene equipped to pump flood water from your house. After we achieve water removal, it is time to turn our attention to drying your home. Fast drying is vital to prevent further damage or even mold growth on your property. Of course, fast drying is also an important part of restoring your home so you can continue with your life.
We use two main pieces of equipment for drying your home: dehumidifiers and air movers.
Dehumidifiers draw in moisture-saturated air and pass it over cooling coils where it forms condensation which is collected in drip trays. Air movers encourage evaporation by directing air over wet surfaces. More evaporation means faster drying times.
SERVPRO understands that calculating the position of air movers and dehumidifiers is key to effective drying.
The number of dehumidifiers needed depends not only on the amount of moisture in your home, but on the extent of the damage, and the types of materials that are wet (such as porous or nonporous). Our IICRC-certified technicians take into account the humidity, the nature of the environment, and the type and capacity of dehumidifiers at hand to calculate how many dehumidifiers to use.
The number and type of air movers we need depends on the kind of materials that are wet, the extent of water damage, and the layout of the room or building. We use a combination of downdraft, centrifugal and low profile air movers for maximum effect.

Basement Cleanup Exposes Need For Professional Mold Remediation In Durham
Mold Remediation to Cleanup and Keep Out Mold in Durham--Try SERVPRO
SERVPRO is the Logical Solution for Mold Cleanup
Cleanups of the big storage areas in your home are never easy, but some circumstances make the job even more daunting. Uncovering unpleasant surprises like a well-established mold colony are overwhelming, usually bringing the cleanup to a halt. SERVPRO has the highly qualified technicians and cutting edge equipment to take care of a mold problem safely and efficiently.
Your basement is your major storage area, and it is time to do some long-delayed sorting. When you pull the last row of boxes out of a corner, you discover a large area of mold damage. Sitting in your Durham kitchen a few minutes later you decide to weigh your options. You hear so many warnings about mold that you choose to call for professional assistance. We are ready to step in to manage the largest home mold problem within hours of your contacting our office.
SERVPRO assembles a team of workers trained in the specific protocols developed by the Environmental Protection Agency to respond to your needs. You want the mold gone, but the remediation must be done carefully to industry standards for you and your family’s safety, and the well being of our crew, too. Removal of the source of the moisture and water is crucial to a successful remediation.
Our workers don personal protective gear and cordon off the area in the basement where you found mold. We use a negative pressure air scrubber to avoid any particles of the infestation from moving to other areas of your home. Access to your HVAC system should be blocked in the area during our work for the same reason.
The next step is to remove the moldy material. This may include some of the boxes if colonies are growing on the cardboard, a favorite food source for the fungi. We stage the moldy items outside, bagged or covered for proper disposal. The foundation surfaces affected receive an antimicrobial treatment with SERVPRO recommended products, and additional debris on the floor and cross beams are removed with HEPA filter equipped vacuums.
Resist the temptation to complete the sanitizing step as a do it yourself project or to augment our work with an “insurance” application of a homemade anti-mold solution. In particular, stay away from bleach solutions which merely lighten the color of the mold. Over 90 percent water, a bleach spray soaks into cinder block construction and reactivates mold growth.
Mold remediation is a job well done by SERVPRO of North Durham. Give us a call at (919) 467-0880 to arrange for an inspection and development of a plan to remediate your moldy basement.

Commercial Water Removal Services for Roof Damage in Durham
SERVPRO Helps Keep Your Shop in Durham Open After Water Damage Occurs
SERVPRO Works Fast to Keep Your Shop Open After a Water Damaging Event
Bad weather can cause roof damage in the form of missing shingles, cracked tiles, or poorly attached gutters. Over time, water can come through and compromise the top floor, roof, and even walls. The damage can appear slowly, unnoticeably, and undetected – until it is too late. Needless to say, the results can be devastating to the business.
After a significant weather event, take some time to inspect your roof for water damage. If something does not seem right, SERVPRO can arrive promptly to provide appropriate commercial water removal services for your Durham shop. Our highly trained technicians follow IICRC recommendations to ensure that your business is operational again in no time.
If the water damage reached the ceiling tiles, removing and replacing individual pieces is typically less expensive than drying. Water usually stains tiles and causes them to bow. However, certain types of tiles (such as asphalt) are more resistant to moisture damage than others, and may, therefore, be salvageable. In any case, removing them allows air to circulate and dry the wet areas above.
When scoping the roof for water damage, SERVPRO technicians examine every part of the construction. Did the water affect the roofing material? If so, we undertake the necessary procedure to patch it permanently or replace where necessary. The same process applies to any roof decking material and other structural parts that sustained water damage. There may be instances when a partnered and referred roofer is needed to complete the fixing.
Drying exterior walls can be difficult because of limited air movement. Insulation in wall cavities significantly reduces air circulation, thus extending the drying time. Regardless of this quandary, drying is usually cheaper than removing and replacing drywall or other similar coverings. Besides that, demolishing the walls can cause much more interruption to the building occupants, whether workers, clients, customers, or dwellers. Our air movers, dehumidifiers, heaters, and ancillary equipment can deal with any issues. We may also drill holes in the top and bottom of the walls to facilitate air movement. The faster the circulation, the more rapid the evaporation.
Keeping an eye on your shop can go a long way towards avoiding hefty repair expenses. SERVPRO of North Durham offers 24/7 commercial water removal services and can respond quickly to your emergency. Call us anytime at (919) 467-0880.

Removing Smoke Odor After a Fire in Your North Durham Home
Smoke odor can damage your home and it's contents and should be cleaned by a professional.
If you’ve ever accidentally burned your food instead of cooking it, you know first-hand how smoky your home can become. The smoke detector usually goes off, you open the windows, perhaps turn on a fan. Hours later the smoke smell still lingers, sometimes in your hair, or in the clothes you were wearing.
This is what happens on a larger scale when there is a fire in your home. The soot, and smoke embeds itself into your furniture, clothing and other porous items. Some homeowners attempt to remove the smoke odor themselves with consumer grade retails products and spray deodorizers; only to be frustrated when the smell returns. Smoke particles bury themselves into fibers, fabrics, and other porous items and need a professional deep clean in order to remove the lingering odor.
Some items in the home may only be lightly affected and simply need airing out. If items are covered in soot, it is best not to disturb them and allow our certified technicians to complete the job.
Here are some tips you can use before our North Durham technicians arrive onsite:
- Limit movement in the home to prevent further damage.
- Place dry, colorfast towels or old linens on carpeted traffic areas to prevent more soiling.
- If electricity is off, empty the freezer and refrigerator and prop doors open.
- Wipe soot from chrome on kitchen and bathroom faucets and appliances then protect with a light coating of lubricant.
- Do not attempt to wash any walls or painted surfaces.
- Do not attempt to shampoo carpet or upholstered furniture.
- Do not attempt to clean any electrical appliances that may have been close to fire or water.
After your home is affected by smoke, contact SERVPRO® of North Durham at 919-790-1222, for our smoke odor removal services that will return your home to normal. Like it never even happened.®
5 Signs Your North Durham Home Has A Failing Hot Water Heater
A failed hot water heater can cause thousands of dollars worth of damage to your North Durham home.
For most home owners, a hot water heater is one of those set it and forget items. It’s a silent, yet integral part of modern convenience. The average residential hot water heater holds 50 - 80 gallons of water. Unfortunately, when it breaks all of that water soaks into your home potentially causing extensive repairs or in some cases, replacement of contents.
Most homeowners have no idea their hot water heater is near the end of is serviceable life, but here are some red flags to alert you.
Rusty water. This one can be a bit problematic because it could be either the inside of the water heater rusting or it could be your home’s plumbing. You will need contact a professional to determine the difference.
Rumbling Noises. Unfortunately, the water in North Durham is hard. This means there are extra minerals in the water. Over time these minerals solidify into sediment which builds up in your hot water heater. The sediment can weigh down the bottom of the tank and shift around causing your tank to make gurgling or rumbling noises. Investigate noises immediately as this is often a sign that can lead to the unit overworking, or worse future leaks.
Condensation. If your unit has any moisture around it, there is a good chance there is an underlying leak or crack.
Lukewarm Water. If your hot water isn’t as hot as it used to be, or you find your family is frequently running out of hot water, it may be time to replace your unit.
Age. The average lifespan of a hot water is about 10 years. You should have a replacement plan in mind around that time frame ideally, before it breaks in order to prevent damage.
We hope these signs are able to alert you to a failing hot water and you can use them to protect your home before it breaks. If disaster does strike, you local SERVPRO® of North Durham is always here to help.
Grilling Safety Tips for Your North Durham Home
The leading cause of home grilling fires are failure to clean the grill and leaks in gas/propane grills.
For many families, Memorial Day weekend marks the official start of the summer season. Grilling competitions and plenty of family gatherings are on the horizon. This also means the increase for fires. While NFPA cites July as the month with the highest number of outdoor grilling fires, May is the second highest month.
SERVPRO® of North Durham wants you to enjoy yourself and have a safe summer season. Here are some stats, do’s and don’ts for grilling.
- July is the peak month for grilling fires.
- 16,600 people went to the emergency room in 2014 due to grilling related injuries.
- 19% of all fires are due to a failure to clean the grill.
- 23% of outside and unclassified grill fires were due to leaks or breaks
- Gas grills pose a greater fire hazard than charcoal grills.
Use a Grill Indoors
Even small tabletop grills need to be utilized outside. Grills release the deadly colorless, odorless gas called carbon monoxide. They are also a fire hazard. Only use electric grills marked safe for indoor usage inside.
Turn on the Gas While The Lid Is Closed
This can cause the gas to build up inside the grill. Once you light the grill and then open it there is the potential for it to explode, causing serious injury.
Overload Your Grill with Food
While it may be tempting especially when feeding a large gathering, overcrowding the grill with fatty items can cause large fire flares.
Leave the Grill Unattended
Have all your prep work ready so when you are grilling you do not have to leave the area. Fires double in size every minute. Catching a fire early is key to keeping it from spreading.
Check for Propane Leaks
When using your grill for the first time after the winter season, you should check your gas and propane grill for leaks. Simply apply a light soap and water solution to the hose and then turn on the gas. If there is a leak in the hose, the soap solution will bubble. Leaks are also evident by a flame that refuses to light or the smell of gas.
Keep Your Grill Clean
Dirty grills are one of the leading causes of home grilling fires. Be sure to remove grease and any buildup from the grill and in the tray below the grill. Charcoal grill users should allow the coals to cool completely before disposing of coals and ashes.
Place Your Grill on Stable Ground
The grill should be level on a flat surface.
Wait to Re-Light
If the flame goes out, turn off the grill and the gas, then wait a minimum of five minutes before re-lighting it.
Have a Safe And Enjoyable Summer
These home grilling safety tips can help prevent fire, injuries, and damage to property. If disaster does strike, SERVPRO® of North Durham is always here, 24/7.

North Durham DIY's Mold Remediation: A Recipe for Disaster
Mold could be an invisible guest in your North Durham home.
After the storm that hit the Triangle area on April 25, 2017 many homeowners decided to go the DIY route. While this is usually a source of pride, and a way to save cash, there are some projects that should be left for the professionals. Mold remediation can be a hazardous and costly project, especially if the work must be done more than once to fix prior mistakes. Weather absolutely plays a factor in mold growth, from excessive rain to flooding wherever there are moisture intrusions you can have the potential of a problem. If your home has a musty, damp, or mildew smell, you may be experiencing the first signs of secondary growth, commonly referred to as mold.
DIY Mold Recipe
- Mold spores
- An organic material food source
- Temperatures between 32 – 122 degrees Fahrenheit
Mix a food source of your choosing (i.e. drywall, wood, upholstery) with mold spores, oxygen, and moisture. Keep a dark, damp area continuously warm for several days. Add humidity greater than 60% to feed the mold spores.
If you went the DIY route and are now experiencing a musty, damp smell, you may be experiencing the first signs of secondary growth, commonly referred to as mold. If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.
If you see signs of mold, call us today at: 919-790-1222.
Fighting the Flu
The weather has become increasingly warmer, but that does not mean the flu season is over yet. Flu season started October 2016, and it may come as a surprise, but the official season does not end until May.
This season the flu has hit residents of Durham county and the entire state especially hard with the death toll now at 170. This is a stark comparison to the 59 flu related deaths across the state from last year.
Each season the influenza vaccine is changed to accommodate suspected strains. According to the CDC this year Flu B is the most common strain. For those that were vaccinated early the effectiveness of the vaccine is reported to be 73%.
With another two weeks to go until flu season is officially over, health officials still recommend vaccines. Other preventative steps include:
- Washing your hands. Soap and water is still the most effective way to kill germs. In those instances when soap and water is not available, hand sanitizer is a good alternative.
- Avoid touching your face.
- Stay at home if you have had a fever. Remain home bound until you have been fever free without the aid of any fever reducing medication for 24 hours.
- Cover your sneezes and coughs with a disposable tissue.
The flu season is nearly over. We want our community to stay safe and healthy and be ready for the upcoming summer fun!

Are Dirty Carpets Making You Sneeze?
North Durham car covered in pollen dust.
The Bull City is home to prestigious universities, entertaining sports teams, beautiful arts centers, and pollen. For those suffering from tree allergies, the peak season of April is near. Welcome, the thin film of pollen dust that coats cars, and homes and leaves sufferers with watery eyes, and runny noses. Hence the greenish-yellow tint on cars across NC this time of year. According to a study done by Elon University, North Carolina has the dubious pleasure of being ranked high among states worst to live in for those with allergies.
If you leave your windows open to enjoy the fresh breeze coming through, you can expect the NC pollen to collect in your home like dust, thus potentially aggravating existing allergies. The constant battle to keep the pollen off the cars, and out of the home is enough for some people to just give up.
If your home has carpet, the pollen dust can collect in the fibers and even thoroughly vacuuming may still leave remnants behind.
SERVPRO® of North Durham offers residential and commercial carpet cleaning. Our technicians are courteous and knowledgeable in all the ways to remove stains, and clean your carpets to like new condition.

Creating an Inventory List for Your North Durham Home
You’ve worked hard to amass the possessions in your home. Some are necessary like a comfortable sofa to sit on, others are creature comforts, such as a Smart TV, and there are some possessions that are priceless family mementos.
Maintaining a home inventory list is a must have document for every residence.
It’s best to have this list in several places such as with a friend, in the cloud, or a home fireproof safety deposit box, in the event the original is destroyed by fire or water.
This list can be as simple or as detailed as you like, but ultimately the more information you have available the easier the process will be while in the midst of an emergency claims process.
At a minimum, your inventory list should include make and model, date purchased, and price paid.
A more comprehensive home inventory list will have the make, model, serial number, receipt, warranty info, purchase date, and photo of the item.
You can make an excel sheet to keep an inventory of your items or create a paper version and ink in the information. For those who would rather do anything other paperwork, a digital list is a viable option. A visual record may even be preferable as it shows if the item is well taken care of, and in good repair.
When making the list, also include the items in your shed, attic, garage, and basement.
Once you’ve done the hard work of creating an inventory, keep it up to date whenever you purchase new items.
Below is a list of items most frequently included in a home inventory list.
- Area Rugs
- Wall Art
- Electronics – TV’s, laptops, digital cameras, tablets
- Sterling Silverware
- Sporting Equipment

What To Do After A Fire
After a fire displaces you from your home, it can be difficult to know what to do next. These tips will get you started in the right direction.
Set-up Shelter For large scale fires that affect the community, local disaster relief services, such as the Red Cross or Salvation Army, may already be on site. They can be of assistance if you need temporary food, medicines, and a place to stay.
Contact Your Insurance Agent You’ll need to start a claim. See if your policy has any ‘Loss of Use’ funding available to cover living and other daily expenses while you are displaced. Be sure to save any receipts during this time, as you may need to have accountability of your spenditures. Once a claim has been placed you’ll need someone to begin the process of restoring your home to its preloss condition. You can contact us 24/7, at 919-790-1222 to handle your contents and structure needs.
Going Back to the Site If the fire department has cleared your property as safe to return, conduct an inventory of all damaged property and contents. Taking pictures is the simplest way to do this. Attempt to locate any valuable documents and records, and your home safe deposit box.
Take Care of your Finances During the midst of this loss, you are still responsible for mortgage payments, even if your home is totally destroyed. You will need to notify your mortgage company of the fire loss and they may be able to provide some guidance.
Your local SERVPRO® of North Durham is available 24/7. We’re always here to help.

Don't Store that in the Garage!
With the start of the new year, most of us try to accomplish new goals, a new fresh start. Getting healthy, organizing our homes, bettering our lives' always seem to be at the top of the list. One space to start cleaning out & organizing- the garage! That extra storage area that easily becomes a catchall for our items. We have compiled a list of items that should not be stored in your garage. Get them out and reclaim your space.
1. Paint- Because the garage is prone to extreme temperature changes, paint should not be stored in the garage. Recycle paint according to your county guidelines or donate it.
2. Electronics- If you are putting electronics out in the garage, you must not be using them. Donate these items because they can not withstand the temperature fluctuations and will easily break.
3. Propane and Hazardous Chemicals- Proper ventilation is key for storage of propane and hazardous chemicals. For safety reasons, these items need to be stored outside.
4. Food- Keeping food in the garage is an open invitation to rodents and insects. Although shopping in bulk can save money, storing extra food in the garage will cause problems. The moisture and humidity will spoil the food. Find room in the house for food storage.
5. Cardboard boxes- Insects, mice and other rodents love cardboard. Invest in waterproof plastic bins to store your items.
Hope these tips help you gain back your garage. Happy Cleaning!

Christmas Tree Safety, keeping the Triangle RDU area safe
As I pulled up to my local grocery store in North Raleigh today, I noticed employees setting up an area outside to start selling fresh trees. Already? Thanksgiving is a week away, can't we celebrate one holiday at a time? I know, I know, it is the "most wonderful time of the year". I must admit, the joy and nostalgia I experience while decorating my tree and home, the glow of lights sparks memories and warms the soul. With that said, it is important to know that fires unfortunately are common this time of year. Christmas tree fires account for approximately 13 million dollars a year in damages. Follow these tips from The American Christmas Tree Association (yes, there truly is an association for everything) for a safe holiday season.
-Fresh trees are less likely to catch fire. Choose a tree with vibrant needles.
-Place your tree away from all heat sources.
-Properly care for your tree. The tree base should always have fresh water inside to prevent the tree from drying out.
-Be sure all your indoor and outdoor lights have been tested in a lab by the UL or ETL/ITSNA for safety and throw away damaged lights.
-Keep all candles away from furniture, decor and your Christmas tree
-Bedtime means lights off! Unplug all Christmas lights!
Stay safe and enjoy "the most wonderful time of the year".

Winterizing your North Carolina Home
10 Tips for Winterizing Your Home
While the start of winter is not officially until December 21st, the cold weather has already begun making its way towards residents of the Triangle NC area. Though the occasional warm front may tease, winter is coming.
Before an all-out cold front attacks it’s best to have your home prepared by winterizing it. Winterizing your home is not as difficult or expensive a task as you may think. Your home is one of your largest assets. Protecting it as much as possible from disaster can potentially save you thousands.
Most everything on the following list can be done by anyone with even modest home improvement skills.
Identify The Water Line Shut-Off Valve
This important control device is usually located inside the home in newer construction. Once detected inform other members of your household and mark it with a large colored tag. The tag will come in handy during an emergency. After pinpointing the water valve, check that is not rusted and that it can closed completely. If any issues are discovered the valve will need to be replaced right away.
Keep It Tidy
Make sure gutters are clean and downspouts are facing away from the home. Also trim any tree limbs that are in danger of breaking during a storm or under the weight of snow and ice.
Check Your Chimney
Fireplaces keep us warm, but they can also be a hazard in the winter. Don’t let your ashes pile up. Keep the fireplace and hearth clean. An extension of your fireplace is the often neglected chimney. Wood burning chimneys need to have a free and clear chimney cap.
Regular Maintenance When it’s cold outside, you want your heat to work. Routine maintenance twice a year on your heating and cooling system will detect potential problems early and keep your unit running efficiently.
The US government reports carbon monoxide-related deaths are highest during colder months. Be sure there are working carbon monoxide alarms in centralized locations on every floor of your home. It’s also a good time to check your fire alarms are in good working order as well.
A clean furnace filter will not only reduce allergens in your home, but also maintain the health of your heating system. Depending on the type of filter, you can change it once at the beginning of the season and you’re good to go all winter long!
Keep Your Faucets Warm
Now that summer is over, it’s time to put away the garden hoses and pull out the faucet wraps. Wrapping your outside faucet is an easy, economical way to keep it from freezing when the temperatures drop.
Drain Your Tank
Hot water heaters should be flushed once every six months. This is especially important in the Raleigh, Durham, Wake Forest area because of the large amounts of sediment that collects in the bottom of the tank from the regions hard water. Flushing the hot water heater, extends the life and could potentially keep the bottom of the heater from rusting out due to heavy sediment debris weighing down the bottom of the heater floor. While you’re out there, check the pressure relief valve as well.
Wash and Dry
FEMA cites there are close to 2,900 home dryer fires every year. Cleaning the lint trap in your dryer isn’t enough. You will also need to clean the trap on the outside of your home. This trap is easily clogged, but only takes moments to clean.
Cover your AC Unit
Your AC unit worked faithfully during the summer months. Before it goes into hibernation, clean out the drain pans, empty any excess water, and cover your unit for the winter. If you have window units, either remove them to reduce energy costs, or insulate them if removing the unit from the window is not an option.
There are your ten tips for winterizing your home. Preparation is always the best defense. However, if a catastrophe does strike, your local SERVPRO® of North Raleigh, Wake Forest, and North Durham is always here night or day. Disaster never takes a day off and neither does SERVPRO®.
